No. Diagnosis isn’t required, nor do benefits affect eligibility. It does help to have any evidence available. You will be asked for evidence of how your disability affects you in work.
Applications are prioritised if you’re about to begin work. We have seen some cases go through within 2 weeks but this is unusual. As of July 2025 cases typically take up to 30 weeks to be processed. Sadly we are not able to control this process. We can provide support in this time but this would be self funded.
We offer interim support via Inclusive Change Ltd until your grant starts. This would be self funded.
Yes, absolutely. If you’re self-employed, freelance, or run your own business, you’re eligible. Access to Work can fund coaching, admin support, equipment, and more to help you manage your work sustainably. Your support should be to enable you to manage your work as a business owner it is not a substitute for employing staff in roles to help grow or deliver your business..
Only if you’re employed. Access to Work will usually contact your employer to discuss reasonable adjustments. If you’re self-employed, they’ll ask about your business and how support will help you stay in work.
You can still apply. Let us know if you’re starting work soon - the DWP prioritises applications from people about to begin new roles. We also offer interim support while your application is processed.
Yes. Support can be tailored for remote work, including assistive tech, coaching, and virtual assistant support. It’s about making your working environment accessible and sustainable, wherever you are.
You can request a review if your needs change, or if you move jobs. Grants are usually awarded for up to 3 years, but can be adjusted if your circumstances shift. We can help you navigate this.
As an employee you will be asked for your employer details. They will contact your employer to check your employment status. Inclusive Change can support you to make an application with our simple pro forma. We know what questions you are likely to be asked and advise on how to advocate and explain your needs as a neurodivergent employee. Take a look at our employee page for more information.
You will be asked to provide evidence of your business turnover. This is usually through your most recent tax return. If you are setting up a new business you will be asked for a business plan that will demonstrate that your business is financially viable. Inclusive Change can support you to create a business plan that is accessible and easy to understand and will meet the criteria for access to work. Take a look at our entrepreneur and freelancer page for more information.
When I set up Inclusive Change back in 2020, I did it with a clear mission: to create meaningful employment opportunities for neurodivergent people, and to prove that inclusion isn’t just nice to have, it’s vital to a thriving workplace.
As we began to grow, I wanted to make sure we had the right support in place for our own team. That’s when we started applying for Access to Work, and, frankly, I was shocked at how hard it was to navigate. The process was confusing, slow, and often inaccessible to the very people it was meant to support.
I realised then that if I, with years of experience, found it overwhelming what chance did someone newly diagnosed or already burnt out have?
That’s why we built our Support Agency: to remove those barriers and help people not just survive at work, but truly thrive. We’ve supported everyone from young autistic adults to self-employed creatives to seasoned professionals who’ve never had workplace support before. And what we’ve seen has been transformative, not just for individuals, but for employers too.
We’ve helped clients get grants approved in weeks, sometimes days. We’ve seen apprentices flourish, freelancers grow their businesses, and employees gain confidence, energy and pride in their work.
Yes, the Access to Work system is in crisis. Yes, it needs reform. But it is also a life-changing fund and with the right guidance and advocacy, it can work.
Neurodiversity isn’t just a checkbox. It’s about building workplaces that value difference, balance adjustments with capability, and truly invest in the potential of every brain in the room.
That’s what we’re here to help you do.
