About the initiative

The West of England Mayoral Combined Authority, led by Mayor Helen Godwin, has secured nearly £5 million of national government funding to deliver the Youth Guarantee Trailblazer programme. As one of only eight such regions in England, the West of England is pioneering new ways to support young people aged 18–21 who are not in education, employment or training.

Delivered in partnership with West of England Mayoral Combined Authority, this initiative is funded by the UK government and forms part of the national Get Britain Working strategy.

This programme forms part of the wider government Get Britain Working Strategy, and aims to ensure every young person has access to education, training, or support to move into employment.

About the Programme

The Youth Guarantee programme supports young people aged 18 to 21 who are not currently in education, employment or training. The programme is designed to help participants build confidence, develop skills, and move into paid work or further training, with tailored support provided every step of the way.

In South Gloucestershire, the Youth Guarantee programme specifically supports young people who may face additional barriers to employment, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), or mental and emotional health needs.

The programme offers personalised, one-to-one support focused on helping young people progress into paid employment, training, or other positive next steps. Support can include

  • Up to 4 weeks of employability coaching, including self-reflection to match you to appropriate jobs

  • Up to 8 weeks supported work placement with 1 to 1 job coaching.

  • Up to 4 weeks employment support and coaching after your placement.

  • Ongoing support once you're in employment or training.

The programme will provide personalised support which could include:

  • Maths and English support for those who have not achieved grade 4 at GCSE.

  • A free bus pass and help with expenses.

  • Tailored social, emotional, and mental health support to help overcome barriers and help you get into education, employment or training
